AOL Guide 2006 - City Best List – Wine Bar

Erato Wine Bar and Grand Market -- City's Best Learn, then savor, the art of wine tasting.

Sleek and sophisticated with its exposed brick walls and earthy wooden accents, Erato adds the scent of fermented grapes to the diverse South Grand neighborhood. With a sommelier on staff all the time, it's the place to come to broaden your wine horizons. Erato boasts of one of the most extensive wine lists in all of St. Louis, offering more than 120 varieties from all over the world. As a market, they sell bottles starting at just $8 for take home. As a wine bar, they offer flights, wines by the glass and even classes to teach everyone how to become a wine connoisseur. Complimenting the wine is an array of artisan cheeses, decadent desserts (the chocolate cake is a must-have) and handmade pizzas. The cheese display case radiates behind the bar, despite the muted lighting. The menu is constantly changing, so come back to try some new tidbit with a different kind of wine. If choosing a wine is still too intimidating, Erato also offers imported beers from all over the world and a rotating menu of specialty cocktails, perfect for every season. On the weekends, it gets rather busy with all the casually clad couples and groups enjoying a bottle while listening to free live jazz, so get there early. -- Jessica Hon
